Is it really unAmerican to suggest America’s pledge of Allegiance is untrue?

While many white conservative Americans have demonstrated in the past five years they believe nationalism is synonymous with Christianity, the very notion for an African American to question the integrity of the pledge of Allegiance may likely get me lynched. “How dare he question America’s pledge of Allegiance! He needs to take his black-a__ back to Africa!” But hold up a minute, brethren! Although you might know the words by memory, have you so professed god-fearing good people sifted through its application to ALL Americans?

I pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

I will assume that you white folks willing to raise hell over questioning the integrity of the pledge of Allegiance are as secure and confident as you want others, unlike you, to believe you are. For starters, if it is actually true in its application to ALL Americans, then you’re right, and I am wrong. Right? There’s nothing to worry about because since it’s as good for ALL Americans as you purport it is, you can surely bet your hooded white rob, AK-47 and confederate flag I will get my ass kicked by a bunch of angry colored folks. “Brutha, WTF wrong with yo stupid ass talking down the pledge of Allegiance! You have no idea how good we got here in America!”

And let’s not forget how you gun-wearing, bible thumping, border closing disciples of Jesus love everybody! Right? So, even if my wondering about the integrity of the pledge of Allegiance is wrong… I know you’re still gonna love me. Right?

So, let’s talk about what bothers me about America’s pledge of Allegiance. First, why is it that white people get to define who God is? Let me just say that I really don’t like your version of God because he winked at slavery, which means he also winked at rape, sodomy, extortion, theft, murder, lynchings, segregation, discrimination, injustice, inequality, and immoral laws. Shall I continue?

Second, what on earth is this bullshit idea about being indivisible? You people, including you “good god-fearing people,” created segregation in every possible form of the word. To prove my objectivity, here’s a dictionary definition of segregation: Segregation is a system that keeps different groups separate from each other, either through physical dividers or using social pressures and laws. Do you good god-fearing people know what an oxymoron is?

The third is the idea of liberty. I recall it was Patrick Henry who said, “give me liberty or give me death.” Right? So, let’s grab the dictionary again to learn what Patrick may have been thinking about liberty. Liberty is a kind of freedom, whether it’s freedom from tyranny, freedom from confinement, or simply the freedom of choice. Hmmm. Should I mention slavery (again), segregation, discrimination, Jim Crow Laws, Convict Leasing, and the criminalization and murder of African American men?

And finally, justice for all. Come on! No honest good god-fearing American is going to argue on this point. Justice for all? Really? Justice for all is simply not true for Americans who are not white like YOU. So, I will end with this. I pledge my heart to heaven. I pledge my life to a loving God looking at me in the context of eternity where I will be enjoyed without concern for the color of my skin.
